Friday 13th strikes …

With all that has happened throughout the region over the recent weeks, today saw the appearance of a significant crack across the access stretch of road leading into the ski village carpark and some “sinking” of the road. This has lead to the decision to close the resort tomorrow (Saturday 14th) whilst investigation is being made into the severity of the subsidence to allow the passage of traffic into resort.

Provisions are being made to allow access to the resort via alternative routes in the event the road needs to be cut off for a longer period and thereby continue enjoying the skiing.

On a more positive note, it has been snowing heavily (not rain!) and is due to continue throughout the day tomorrow. We are still expecting to be able to ski on Sunday 15th and with the forecast improvement in the weather this is great news for the coming half term week.

What will be open is still unknown as work continues with the piste & lift restorations & reparations. However, we expect this to significantly more than what might be expected after all the bad press on the weather impact of late. Remember, it’s been harsh but we still have heaps of snow (3-4metres) in spite of the rain, cables have come off lifts but some are already back on again, the base of the Rio piste was washed almost completely away and within 24hours they have already reconstructed it again into perfectly skiable condition – we are not a disaster zone!!

For example, today’s provision for opening showed in excess of 35kms of skiing in spite of the water logging of late. Now with temperatures dropping, the water is freezing over and with heavy snowfall covering everything up, this provision is likely to increase!

06/02/2026 – Miracle work in action….

After the super-storm of the 4th, and what some may consider as irreparable damage to the resort, Sierra Nevada’s expert piste workers are busy working their magic with the restoration of the lower section of the Rio Piste that was washed away.

IMPORTANT: Temperatures have dropped, the water is freezing up and it is snowing (not raining) beautifully! Significant snowfall is expected during Saturday with further intermittent snowfall from Sunday to Tuesday to top up the affected areas.

Already, there were around 16km of slopes open on Saturday 7th at the outset of the day, whilst work will continue tirelessly with further reparations/draining of the pistes, re-grooming and marking of the slopes, relocation of cables that have dropped from the runners of certain lifts, de-icing of lifts, pulleys and cables etc..

The forecast is showing a clear levelling on intensity with wind speeds dropping significantly from Sunday onwards thereby giving a much more positive outlook on the coming days for enjoying the slopes and especially anyone concerned for the half term week of the 16th onwards!!

Our word to you is: Don’t give up hope, things are really not as bad as they may appear from social media posts – they are dramatic (and quite true), but not in any way hopeless!! You will be surprised at how quickly Sierra Nevada’s piste management committee are able to return things to what they were!
